SandboxAQ is actively hiring the best and brightest engineers, scientists and technologists from around the world, across a broad range of disciplines, to fuel the growth of our company and accelerate the development of AQ solutions for our customers. To this end, we are thrilled to welcome Carlos Aguilar Melchor to the SandboxAQ family as the leader of the Cryptography Research team.

Based in France, Carlos brings a wealth of research, academic and practical experience to SandboxAQ. He has been working within the Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) domain as an academic for 20 years across numerous universities, including the very prestigious Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO). He was also a consultant for 10 years, working for companies such as Airbus and supporting two of the teams present in the third round of NIST’s PQC standardization. He is the co-inventor of a patent covering many of the existing PQC key exchanges, and the author of nearly 100 publications cited more than two thousand times.

At SandboxAQ, Carlos will guide his research team and make sure it has everything needed to support our engineering and product teams. His contributions will be pivotal to enhancing our work in different product areas. He is also responsible for PQC training, both internally and for our customers, and will be instrumental in recruiting future employees, advisors, academic collaborators, post-docs, PhDs and residents. Among the latest new additions to his team is Nina Bindel, a former post-doc researcher in the cryptography and computer algebra group at Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany, who was recently affiliated with the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. We are excited to welcome her to SandboxAQ as a full-time research scientist.

Carlos was formerly the head of the French National Network Security Research Council. He was also a member of the bureau of the National Cybersecurity Research Council, which covers the whole area of cybersecurity (cryptography included). In these councils, he helped organize national meetings and training programs, funded other research initiatives and PhD/Industry hackathons, and helped the government with strategic research decisions.

Carlos is actually no stranger to the SandboxAQ family. He previously worked with Marc Manzano on another successful venture. When we formed SandboxAQ, we reached out to Carlos to be a consultant in parallel to his work at ISAE-SUPAERO, the world leader in aerospace engineering higher education. According to Carlos, “the exchanges were so rich, and the roadmap and working environment so exciting, that I decided to take my leave from the university and jump in.” We’re so glad he did, given the tremendous need to migrate the world’s cryptographic systems to PQC.

With his extensive experience, background and connections to industry, academia and government, we are proud to welcome Carlos to the team.
